“Over time we developed a special connection, one that helped all of us reclaim a sense of purpose. “- Denise Tarantino, Photographer

I spent more than a year’s time documenting the various organic farms throughout Marin and Sonoma Counties and across California’s Central Valley. While on the farms, on an unrelated assignment, I recognized that each had its own small cluster of oddly displaced animals. I learned that the animals were separated from the herd for one reason or another. While the animals were well cared for, fed and sheltered, they also appeared isolated and lonely.

And so, our relationship began. After photographing the happenings in the fields, I’d visit with the critters. They were happy to see me, and I see them. We’d share my breakfast and make conversation. As our trust developed, they willingly posed for portraits. Over time we developed a special connection, one that helped all of us reclaim a sense of purpose.
